Strawberry Onions are here!

Plant City Florida is well known as the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World.  What most people don’t know is that most local farmers also grow “Strawberry Onions”.  You may ask, What is a Strawberry Onion?  Do they taste like strawberries?   A Strawberry Onion is a Savannah Hybrid Sweet Onion which is grown on the perimeter of  the strawberry fields.  Sadly, they do not taste like strawberries, but they are sweet.

Strawberry Onions are available from February to April.  It’s funny to hear customers describing our Strawberry Onions to their friends or to other customers.  I’ve often heard them say “These strawberry onions are as sweet as an apple”.  Last year we decided to start shipping our strawberry onions to the Northeast US via UPS.  So far, they’ve made it all the way to Maine, Ohio and Michigan.  The Strawberry Onions were such a hit last year, that we have already doubled last years shipments.

At the market, we often joke that the Strawberry Onions are planted on the edges to “keep the elephants away”.  At home, we use Strawberry Onions almost exclusively when they are in season mostly because they are so sweet, but I prefer them because they won’t make me cry!  You can read this earlier post with our favorite way to enjoy them.  Have you ever tried our Strawberry Onions?  How do you enjoy them?

We grow tons of Organic produce but this looks like I will have to try to have shipped to me since it’s not warm enough here to grow through the winter. Thanks!

Hello, I’m interested in knowing the correct name for The Florida Sweet onion. While in Florida I purchase a large sweet onion which locals call the Florida Sweet, however I haven’t been able to find anyone who can give me the correct name of this onion. I was looking at your article and you mention strawberry onion, could this be the one I purchase at flea markets near Fort Myers? The vendors say they buy them in plant city, but only know them as Florida Sweets, this is not a brand which can be ordered without knowing the correct name. I would like to purchase seeds, bulbs or plants. The onions I’m looking for looks like the pictures you posted. They are usually sold with the tops still attached. Every time I ask for Florida Sweet onions I get the same onion? I would appreciate any information regarding this matter. If you sell seeds and etc. please let me know. Thanks in advance for your time.

I buy these every year when we come to Florida. I usually bring 45-60 home with us. I cut the tops off after we get home, wrap them individually in either paper towel or newspaper and place them in my refrigerator. They will usually stay firm for about 5 months. Love them!
