BBQ without the grill

One of the things I like about working at the market is meeting new people.  A while back a customer asked where we kept the Everglades Gourmet Moppin BBQ Sauce.  I helped the customer find it and she was so excited about it I couldn’t help but try it myself.  This Moppin Sauce is Fresh From Florida and made with Florida Sweet Onions.

It’s been a couple of years since I met that customer looking for the Moppin BBQ sauce.  I can tell you this is the only BBQ sauce we use in our home.  One of my favorite Ingrid Hoffman’s recipe is for a Caribbean Salmon with mango-veggie salsa and guava barbeque sauce.  Her time-saving tip is this: mix 1/2 cup of Guava jam or jelly into 1 1/2 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce.  I mix Davidson of Dundee guava butter with Everglades Moppin BBQ sauce, top the salmon and broil in the oven for 12-15 minutes.  That was our dinner a couple of nights ago.  For tonight’s dinner, I spotted some butternut squash earlier at the market.

Cubed butternut squash, diced yellow onion, drizzle olive oil, salt and pepper.  Into the broiler for 15 minutes.  Tonight’s dinner cooked in the crock pot all day.  Glad to come home to a “cooked meal”.  Thanks Martha Stewart!

The ribs cooked in ketchup, apple cider vinegar, mustard powder, salt, pepper, dark brown sugar and cayenne pepper.  The gravy was delicious on the mashed potatoes, but we used our Moppin Sauce to dip the pork into.  Everyone was happy after tonight’s dinner.  Which is your favorite BBQ Sauce?

Tampa Bay Blueberry Festival at Keel & Curley Winery

Plant City is well known for its annual Strawberry Festival which brings thousands of people to our little town in celebration of our winter harvest.  But did you know, that Keel & Curley Winery celebrated their 5th Annual Blueberry Festival this weekend?

Keel & Curley Winery is located off Branch Forbes Road in Plant City.  The Winery is best known for their Blueberry Wines.  Not sure which one you’d like?  No problem.  During the Blueberry Festival, they offer a wine tasting area where you can try all of their wines.

There was quite a turn out of people to check out the Blueberry wine as well as the Blueberry picking.  We had a great time seeing some of our regular customers as well as making new friends.

Keel & Curley provided a free bounce house and giant inflatable slide for the kids.  There was also a clown doing face painting and balloon art. It would not be a festival without festival food, so there were hot dogs, burgers, giant turkey legs and even tacos.  A couple of lemonade stands, smoothies and yes, they even had blueberry shortcake!  Other vendors included honey, orchids, cupcakes, razzle dazzle shirts, blueberry shortcake, Viktoria Richards chocolates and the cutest “Merry-time Art Tiki Bar Signs”.

Overall, the Tampa Bay Blueberry Festival was a success.  This was our first time at the Blueberry Festival and we thoroughly enjoyed it.  Next time you are looking for something to do, take a drive out to Plant City and check out some of our neighbors!  You will not be disappointed.

Tried and True Turkey Burgers

The first time I had ground turkey meat, I was a freshman at the University of Florida.  My friends decided to make spaghetti sauce with ground turkey and let’s just say it was edible.   A while back I started  cutting out magazine recipes and saving them.  One of the first Christmas presents I received from my mother in law was this 3-ring binder “cookbook”.  I can honestly say I loved it from day one.

Looking at the recipes in this book brings back a lot of memories.  It’s like looking at a time capsule.  There are overnight marinade recipes, and recipes with 60 minute cooking times; neither which will be happening at my house between the months of October and April.  Some of the recipes have been tried and perfected while others continue to wait or haunt me… After my first attempt with ground turkey, it took a while to try it again.

One of the recipes in my cookbook is for Ground Turkey Burgers*.  This recipe has become one of my “tried and true” recipes.  I call it festive turkey burgers because it has shredded bits of zucchini and carrots mixed with ground turkey.  Grate one carrot and one zucchini.  Mix it with 1 pound of ground turkey meat, 1 egg, 1 or 2 minced garlic cloves, sprinkle some salt and there you have it!  I saute them with olive oil for about 4 to 5 minutes per side on medium heat.

The best part: you don’t have to make a veggie side if you are too busy.  Add a quick salad and our family favorite: baked sweet potato fries.

Do you have any “tried and true” recipes?  Do you “sneak” veggies into your meals?
